Our Mission.

VIC SMITH TUESDAY NIGHT TRIALS

Please come join us every Tuesday night during daylight saving time for some fun sailboat racing. Our mission is simple, to encourage new skippers and sailors into the sport of yacht racing along with experienced skippers to try out new things.

Here are the details on how this works.

Membership is required to race, however membership is open to everyone. Our yearly membership duty is ($30.00). The cost to race the whole season is $50.00, a grand total of $80.00. Costs are pro-rated for those who wish to participate towards the end of the season. There are (6) series with (5) races in each series. Each series has a different course. The first three races of the season known as the Warmup Series are free. So, dues must be paid by the start of the first series.

Our sailing instructions and notice to race will be posted on our website in our Notice Board section a few days before the event begins.

There are three established classes based on the vessels PHRF SoCal rating.   The classes are as follows:

A- CLASS – class is for full on race boats and experienced skippers.

B-CLASS – is like PHRF except they are cruising boats with performance equipment installed.

C- CLASS – is for smaller boats and skippers who are new to racing and are concerned about being pushed around by aggressive boats at the start line and not ready to compete in the Sunset Series.

Please note that races may be cancelled due to foul weather.

After the event we gather at the Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club, who is hosting us, for the after race get together. This is an ideal place to meet skipper’s and new crew seeking skipper’s.

Our club is now a proud member of US SAILING. If you become a member of MDRVMF you will receive five dollars off your US SAILING membership if you choose to join US SAILING If you are not part of US SAILING there are lots of benefits in joining.

Who is Vic Smith?

Vic Smith began running the Tuesday night races back in 1981 and it was called the Tuesday Night Trials (TNT). The fleet had social events, pot luck Sunday dinners along with racing, After race gathering were held at various docks and yacht clubs that Vic Smith organized.  In 2014 the fleet voted to have the name changed to Vic Smith Tuesday Night Trials (VSTNT).

After Vic Smith passing , others continued to hold and honor Vic Smith’s concept of low-cost fun racing that everyone could participate in and enjoy.

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever
